Trying harder to sleep is the classic one — sleep is the only skill that punishes effort, because effort is arousal by definition. Lying in bed for hours "resting" feels productive but teaches your brain that bed is a place for frustrated wakefulness; sleep scientists limit time-in-bed-awake for exactly this reason. What a normal night actually looks like
A surprising share of insomnia distress comes from measuring yourself against a night nobody has. Healthy sleep onset takes 10 to 20 minutes — falling asleep the instant your head lands is a sign of sleep deprivation, not excellence. Brief awakenings are also standard equipment: most adults surface two to six times a night at the seams between sleep cycles, usually for seconds, and simply do not remember them. Name what you want examined. "I can't sleep" invites generic advice; "I fall asleep fine some nights but lie awake wired for hours on others — I'd like to rule out thyroid and iron, check whether this is a circadian-timing problem, and discuss whether CBT-I is available to me" gives the appointment a shape.
