Short answer
Nervous System Snapshot is Welltory's reading of your autonomic state at a single moment. From one heart rate variability measurement it shows three things: intensity — how activated your system is, ease — how readily it can settle, and clarity — how well the two branches are working together. You can take it any time of day, in any position, with a phone camera or a connected wearable. It answers what state you are in right now, not how your night went.
Note: this is a wellness measurement, not a medical diagnosis. It is not an electrocardiogram and does not replace a doctor's assessment.
One measurement, two ways to read it
Welltory interprets the same heart rate variability reading in two different views. They are not two names for one thing — they answer different questions.

We recommend Nervous System Snapshot as the default, because it reflects your state in real time and does not require you to measure under identical conditions every morning. You can switch between the two views in the app's measurement settings. Measurements shown in your Feed are always interpreted as Heartbeat Reports.
Do you need a wearable?
No. A Nervous System Snapshot can be taken with your phone camera alone — you cover the lens and its light with a fingertip and stay still for about a minute. The full picture of what a camera reading does and does not give you is in measuring HRV without a wearable.
A wearable adds what a spot reading cannot: overnight and continuous data. Welltory reads Apple Watch, Samsung Watch and Bluetooth heart rate monitors directly, and pulls continuous data through Apple Health, Health Connect, Samsung Health, Oura and Garmin. Start with the phone you already have; add hardware when you want the night as well as the moment.
What the three parts mean
Intensity is driven by the sympathetic branch of your nervous system — the one that mobilises you. It raises alertness, speeds things up and prepares the body to act. It is what drives focus, reaction and forward momentum, and it shapes how energised or urgent the moment feels.
Ease is driven by the parasympathetic branch. This is the part that softens your internal state: it slows things down, makes the body feel safe, and lets an experience feel manageable rather than merely survivable. Ease is not the absence of intensity — you can have both at once, and that combination is usually the good one.
Clarity reflects how well the two branches are working together. When they are in sync it is easier to drop into what you are doing and stay carried by it. When they are not, that sense of immersion is harder to reach even if you are not especially stressed.
This is the part most HRV readouts skip. A single number tells you a level. Intensity, ease and clarity tell you a shape — and the shape is what you actually feel from the inside.
Reading the colours
You do not need to interpret numbers. The reading fills with colour, and each colour is a combination of intensity and ease.

Two things worth saying plainly. Red is not a failure and blue is not a reward. A red reading before a hard conversation is your body doing its job. A blue reading in the evening is exactly right; the same blue reading at 10 a.m. on a workday is worth a second look.
And colour is not a verdict on you. It describes a moment. The useful signal is the pattern across a week, not the reading you happen to dislike.
Why we made a state reading rather than one more score
Most nervous system features in consumer apps deliver a single number — a readiness score, a recovery percentage — computed once, overnight, and handed to you in the morning. That design has real strengths: sleep is the cleanest measurement window there is, and an overnight average is stable and comparable night to night.
But a single daily number carries a hidden assumption: that your nervous system has one state per day. It does not. It shifts across a morning meeting, a walk, a meal, a difficult message. A number computed while you were asleep cannot describe the state you are in when you actually stop to ask.
Three consequences we designed around.
A state has more than one dimension. "Low HRV" can mean a body that is mobilised and coping, or a body that has run out of room to respond. Those feel completely different and call for opposite responses. Splitting the reading into intensity, ease and clarity keeps that distinction visible instead of averaging it away.
Strict protocols exclude the people who need this most. Morning-only measurement assumes you wake up in a comparable state each day. For someone with ME/CFS, a reading taken the moment they wake captures a body that needs thirty to ninety minutes to come online. For someone with POTS, body position alone changes the result enough that it is used diagnostically in clinical settings. A reading you can take when you are ready, in a position you choose, adapts where a fixed window cannot.
The interesting information is often in the change. A single reading is a point. Two readings either side of a meeting, a walk or a meal are a measurement of that thing. The second use only exists if measuring is cheap and unconstrained.
What we are not claiming. That a spot reading beats continuous overnight monitoring. It does not — it cannot show you how your system behaved for eight hours, and one reading is always noisier than an average of many. If you have a wearable, connect it: Welltory reads overnight and continuous data from Apple Health, Health Connect, Samsung Health, Oura and Garmin, and the two together cover more than either does on its own.
What comes with every reading
Alongside the state itself you get a data block with your heart rate, the total beats recorded, and an accuracy level. That last one matters more than people expect: it tells you whether to trust this particular reading or simply take another.
Accuracy has two components. Behaviour quality covers your position, movement and breathing. Technical quality covers how clean the signal was. A score of 95–100% means what you are looking at reflects what your body was doing. A low score is not a bad result about you — it is a bad recording, and the fix is to sit still and measure again.
If you prefer numbers: the Heartbeat Report view
The same measurement, read as a Heartbeat Report, gives you four personalised scores rather than a state.
Stress is physiological tension — how hard your regulatory systems are working right now. Not mood. High after a workout or a hard day is normal; high for several days running is a signal to slow down. Very low stress in the evening is good. Very low stress in the afternoon, alongside low energy, can mean the system has powered down to conserve rather than relaxed.
Energy is your capacity to recover and absorb load. Energy can read high while you feel tired — that usually means your body has already switched into recovery and the feeling will catch up.
Focus is readiness for mental work. High means it is a good window for deep work; low means your brain will not fully switch on, and pushing costs more than it returns.
Health is resilience — your body's functional reserve. It is computed from HRV alone, with no symptom input, so it will not always match how you feel. Sometimes it drops before symptoms appear.
Alongside these you can see HRV Score (calculated from lnRMSSD, a standard marker of parasympathetic activity), nervous system balance as a sympathetic-parasympathetic split, and coherence, which reflects how synchronously heart, breathing and brain are working. Coherence needs at least 80 heartbeats in the recording; if it is missing, the reading was too short.
What each state is actually good for
Knowing your state is only useful if it changes something. Here is what each one tends to be suited to, with the caveat that this is a general pattern rather than an instruction.
Green — balanced intensity and ease. This is the state to spend on things that matter: deep work, difficult conversations, decisions, training that requires precision. It tends to be the easiest state to stay engaged in, because neither branch is dominating.
Red — high intensity, low ease. Your system is mobilised. That is right before something demanding and less right at 3 p.m. on an ordinary Tuesday. Red is workable for short bursts of urgent execution and poor for anything requiring sustained attention or nuance. If red is where you spend most of your week, the useful question is what is sustaining it rather than how to fix today.
Yellow — between the two. Alert without being settled. Fine for routine work, less good for anything that needs either deep focus or genuine rest. Often a transitional state.
Blue — ease high, intensity low. Calm and slowed down. Ideal in the evening and after effort. The same state at the start of a workday, or alongside a persistent feeling of exhaustion, is worth paying attention to: a system can be quiet because it has recovered, or quiet because it has little left to spend.
That last distinction is the reason this reading has three dimensions instead of one. A quiet system and a depleted system look similar on a single-number scale and feel nothing alike.
Reading your own patterns over time
One snapshot describes a moment. The value compounds when you have several.
Pairs around an event. Take a reading before and after a walk, a meeting, a meal or a nap. The difference between them tells you about that thing specifically, which no daily average can.
The same slot each day. A morning reading taken under similar conditions builds a comparable series. This is where a drift becomes visible — a gradual shift across two or three weeks that no single day reveals.
Your own range, not a norm. Population ranges for heart rate variability are extremely wide between healthy individuals. Comparing your numbers to a chart tells you very little. Comparing this week to your own last month tells you something real.
Context alongside the number. A reading without a note about what preceded it is a number you will not be able to interpret in a fortnight. Sleep, alcohol, illness, training and posture all move these values substantially, and any of them can explain a reading that otherwise looks alarming.
What moves these readings
Sleep is the most consistent influence: short, late or broken nights lower next-morning variability. Alcohol suppresses variability overnight and often into the following day. Illness frequently lowers it before symptoms arrive. Training load lowers it for a day or two, which is adaptation rather than harm — what matters is the return to range. Posture changes the result within minutes, which is why the same position each time matters more than the same clock time. Paced or deliberate breathing raises variability immediately and substantially, which is exactly why you should breathe normally during a measurement you intend to compare.
The raw metrics are there too
Every measurement also produces the standard HRV parameters used across research, sports science and clinical practice: SDNN, RMSSD, pNN50, AMo50, CV and others, plus a histogram of your beat-to-beat intervals and a rhythmogram of how they changed during the reading.
These are not personalised. They are compared against general population norms, which span an enormous range between healthy individuals — which is exactly why the interpreted views exist on top of them.
Frequency analysis — Total Power, VLF, LF and HF — requires at least 300 R-R intervals, so it lives in a separate longer measurement mode. That is a property of the maths: below roughly 280 usable intervals a frequency spectrum cannot be computed reliably, and we would rather tell you that than show you one anyway.
Where to find it and how to switch views
Your readings live in two places. The Feed shows each measurement as it arrives, always interpreted as a Heartbeat Report. The Journal collects everything in one timeline — your interpretation, workouts, daily activity, sleep, and your own notes on blood pressure, mood and weight — and it is where you switch between the two views.
On iOS, the Journal is in the bottom navigation bar or under Menu. On Android it is in the bottom navigation bar. The choice of view is a setting, not a separate measurement: the same recording is simply read a second way, so switching does not cost you anything and does not require measuring again.
That matters more than it sounds. If you have been taking morning readings under consistent conditions and have a history built up as Heartbeat Reports, switching to Nervous System Snapshot does not discard any of it.
How to get a reading worth acting on
Sit with your back supported, or lie down. Use the same position each time you want to compare.
Wait 10–15 minutes after activity so your heart rate settles.
Do not control your breathing — no deliberate deep or even breaths. Paced breathing raises HRV and makes readings incomparable.
Do not talk, and do not move.
Check the accuracy score before you draw a conclusion from a reading.
Judge patterns across a week. One reading is a point; a week is information.
If a reading looks unexpectedly calm while you feel unwell, that is worth knowing about — see when a good HRV reading is not good news.
Training your baseline takes a week or two of regular morning readings, after which the app tells you it has learned your personal range. Until then, the interpretation leans on population norms and will be less sharp.
What it cannot do
It is not a diagnosis. It is a wellness measurement computed from heart rhythm, not a clinical assessment, and it is not an electrocardiogram.
It does not detect arrhythmias. And if you take a reading during an arrhythmia episode, accuracy will be low — our algorithm cannot yet distinguish arrhythmia from a poor signal.
It does not read emotion. Physiological stress and felt stress often diverge. After exercise or an exciting event your body can be highly activated while you feel great.
One reading is not a trend. Nervous system state moves constantly. That is the point of it, and also its limit.
Readings may be unreliable if you are under 18 or pregnant, because those bodies regulate differently.
When to see a clinician rather than an app: fainting or near-fainting, chest pain, a racing or irregular heartbeat that does not settle, breathlessness at rest, or a resting heart rate that changes sharply and stays changed.
