The real cost of tracking your nervous system in 2026: device + subscription over 1 and 3 years
Phone camera, chest strap, Apple Watch, Galaxy Watch, Garmin, Pixel Watch, Oura or WHOOP: what each costs in year one and over three years on official US list prices, what you get for it — passive 24/7 tracking or spot readings — and what it costs just to read the data from a device you already own.

Short answer
Tracking your heart rate variability (HRV), stress and recovery costs anywhere from $0 to about $1,077 over three years, depending on the setup. A phone camera and a free app cost nothing; a smartwatch is mostly a one-time purchase ($249 to $399.99 for the models below, no subscription required); an Oura Ring 4 is $349 plus a $69.99-a-year membership, or $558.97 over three years; WHOOP has no device price at all — the band comes inside a yearly membership of $199, $239 or $359, so three years cost $597 to $1,077.
The bigger difference is not the price but the window. A ring, a band and most watches record passively, through the night and the day. A phone camera or a chest strap gives you a deliberate spot reading when you sit still for a minute or two. If you already own one of those devices, the only cost left is reading the data — and that can be $0.
Before you blame yourself for "not sticking with tracking", check what your setup actually showed you: often the gap is the window or the price, not your discipline.

Note: this guide is published by Welltory, which makes one of the apps mentioned. Every price below is a US list price before tax, taken from the company's own website, store or announcement and checked on October 22, 2026; where an official page did not show a price, we say so and leave the number out. Prices change and differ by country and by store, so each company's own page is the source of truth. Welltory is a general wellness product: it helps you track and understand your data, and it does not diagnose, treat or replace medical care.
What does it cost to track HRV and stress over 1 and 3 years?
Here is the arithmetic on list prices, so you can compare the shape of each cost rather than take anyone's word for it. "Required subscription" means you need it for the core tracking to work; optional subscriptions are shown in their own rows. We ignore tax, discounts, sales, included trial months and any future change to renewal prices.

Sources and dates: apple.com, samsung.com, store.google.com, polar.com, ouraring.com, support.ouraring.com, whoop.com, welltory.com/plans — checked October 22, 2026, US dollars before tax. Garmin's product and Connect+ pages did not show a US price on that date, so the vívoactive 6 figure is the suggested retail price from Garmin's launch announcement (April 1, 2025) and the Connect+ figure is from Garmin's Connect+ announcement (March 27, 2025). Samsung showed the Galaxy Watch8 on sale on October 22; we use the list price. Welltory's prices are its website prices; App Store and Google Play prices can differ.
Three things the table cannot show. First, what you get is not the same: a ring, a band or a watch records your night without you doing anything, and a phone or a strap only knows what you measured. Second, the shape of the cost: WHOOP's price is entirely recurring, Oura's is mostly upfront, a watch is almost all upfront, and an app subscription is optional. Third, the device you already own changes everything — more on that below.
If you only want the three-way comparison of Welltory, Oura and WHOOP, with accuracy studies and how to combine them, we cover it in detail in Welltory vs Oura vs WHOOP.

What counts as "tracking your nervous system"?
In consumer devices, "nervous system tracking" almost always means heart rate variability: the small, constantly changing gaps between heartbeats. When you are rested and calm, those gaps tend to vary more; under stress, illness, poor sleep or heavy training, they tend to vary less. Stress scores, Body Battery, Readiness, Recovery and Energy Score are all different companies' ways of turning HRV and other signals — resting heart rate, sleep, temperature, activity — into one number you can act on.
The two ways of getting that signal cost very different amounts:
Passive, 24/7 tracking. A ring, a band or a watch you wear to bed collects data on its own. You get overnight HRV, sleep and a morning score without lifting a finger. You pay for that convenience with the device, sometimes a subscription, and charging.
Deliberate spot readings. A phone camera with a fingertip over the lens, or a chest strap, gives you a short measurement when you sit still. It costs little or nothing, but it only knows the moments you measure — it does not record your night.
Neither is "better" in general. A spot reading taken every morning under the same conditions shows a trend that is perfectly usable; passive tracking adds the night and catches things you would never think to measure. Choose by which question you want answered. We explain how a phone reading works and how accurate it is in how accurate is HRV from a phone camera.
How much is an Oura Ring, and what does the Oura membership cost?
How much is the Oura Ring? On ouraring.com on October 22, 2026, Oura Ring 4 starts at $349 (Silver and Stealth), with Ceramic and Metallic Gold finishes at $399. The newer Oura Ring 5 starts at $399 in Silver and Black, and $499 in Gold, Deep Rose, Stealth and Brushed Silver, according to Oura's own buying guide published October 13, 2026.
Oura membership cost. The Oura Membership is $5.99 a month or $69.99 a year in the US, according to Oura's support page (last updated October 16, 2026). New members get one complimentary month that starts when the ring is paired with the app; Oura says it cannot be paused or restarted once it begins.
Paying monthly costs $71.88 a year, so the annual plan is slightly cheaper if you know you will keep the ring. Over three years, Oura Ring 4 plus the annual membership comes to $558.97, or about $15.53 a month; with Oura Ring 5 it is $608.97, or about $16.92 a month.
Oura subscription cost — is it the same thing? Yes. Oura calls it a membership; people search for it as a subscription. There is one membership tier at the time of writing.
If you are deciding between Oura and something that does a similar job, our guide to an Oura Ring alternative looks at the options by what they measure.
Does Oura work without a subscription?
Partly. According to Oura's support page (updated October 16, 2026), without a membership you can see your three daily Oura scores — Readiness, Activity and Sleep — plus ring battery, basic profile information, app settings and Explore content. You can still export your data through the Membership Hub, but not through the Oura API.
Oura also says Gen2 rings do not need a membership and are not charged membership fees, although many newer features do not run on Gen2 hardware.
So "Oura without a subscription" is a real option, but a narrow one: three scores, without the detail behind them. If the detail is what you bought the ring for, budget the membership into the price from day one.
How much is WHOOP, and what does the membership include?
WHOOP cost works differently from almost everything else in this guide: there is no separate device price. The band is included in a yearly membership. On whoop.com on October 22, 2026:
WHOOP One — $199 a year. WHOOP 5.0 device, wired charger, Recovery, Sleep and Strain scores, activity, VO2 max and heart rate zones, and a 14+ day battery.
WHOOP Peak — $239 a year. Everything in One, plus Healthspan with WHOOP Age, Stress Monitor and Health Monitor with alerts, and a wireless battery pack.
WHOOP Life — $359 a year. Everything in Peak on the WHOOP MG device, plus Heart Screener with ECG readings, on-demand AFib detection and Blood Pressure Insights.
WHOOP's membership page shows annual prices only.
How much is WHOOP over time? The WHOOP membership cost over three years is $597 for One, $717 for Peak and $1,077 for Life — about $16.58, $19.92 and $29.92 a month. Because the cost is entirely recurring, it keeps growing at the same pace for as long as you wear the band, while a watch or a ring is mostly paid off in the first year.
What do Apple Watch, Galaxy Watch, Garmin and Pixel Watch cost if you don't want a subscription?
This is where most people already are: a watch on the wrist that tracks more than they look at. None of the four needs a subscription for its core health tracking.
Apple Watch. On apple.com on October 22, 2026, Apple Watch SE 3 starts at $249 and Apple Watch Series 12 at $399. Apple's support pages tie the new HRV view, daytime vitals and the Readiness score to Series 12 and Ultra 4. Apple says Series 12 measures HRV as often as every five minutes, and Readiness gives a daily 0–10 score built from recent activity, overnight vitals and sleep, for users aged 13 and older. Apple's support pages for these features do not mention a subscription. What Apple Watch does and does not explain about stress and sleep is the subject of what Apple Watch measures.
Samsung Galaxy Watch8. From $299.99 on samsung.com (40 mm list price; it was shown on sale on October 22). Samsung's page lists automatic stress tracking throughout the day and an Energy Score based on yesterday's sleep, activity and heart rate. Some features need an Android phone and a Samsung account; the page does not mention a subscription.
Garmin vívoactive 6. $299.99 suggested retail price at launch. Garmin lists overnight HRV status, Body Battery, all-day stress tracking and a sleep score with sleep coaching. Garmin Connect+ is an optional subscription at $6.99 a month or $69.99 a year, and Garmin said at launch that "all existing features and data in Garmin Connect will remain free." With the annual Connect+ plan, the vívoactive 6 costs $509.96 over three years.
Google Pixel Watch 5. From $399.99 on the Google Store, which lists heart rate variability, resting heart rate, breathing rate, blood oxygen and skin temperature variation, and includes three months of Google Health Premium. Google Health Premium has replaced Fitbit Premium; the Google Store lists it "from $9.99" without a separate annual figure, so we do not add it to the totals. Some features are part of Premium — Google's Fitbit Charge 6 page ($159.95), for example, says its Daily Readiness Score is available with Google Health Premium.
Over three years, a watch you keep costs the same as in year one. That is the quiet advantage of a one-time purchase — as long as the watch lasts.
What does a chest strap plus an app cost?
A chest strap is the cheapest way to get a heartbeat-by-heartbeat signal without a camera. The Polar H10 is $104.95 on polar.com in the US (checked October 22, 2026). It does not record your night or show scores on its own — it sends the signal to an app while you take a reading.
With Welltory, a compatible strap is one of the ways to take an HRV measurement: Welltory's device table lists the Polar H10 for HRV measurements, along with other Bluetooth straps that record raw beat-to-beat (RR) intervals. The free version gives one measurement a day; with Premium annual, a strap setup comes to $203.95 in the first year and $401.95 over three.
A strap makes sense if you train with heart rate anyway, or if you want a deliberate reading that does not depend on finger placement over a camera. It does not make sense if you want to wear something to bed.
What can a phone camera do for $0?
More than people expect. A phone camera and flash can read your pulse from a fingertip using the same optical principle a wearable uses, and turn it into HRV. In a 2022 study in elite cyclists at rest, Welltory's camera measurement showed no significant difference from a simultaneous ECG — a resting daytime snapshot on trained athletes, not overnight data.
What you give up is the night. A phone does not know how you slept unless another device tells it. What you keep is a daily trend under the same conditions, which is where most of the useful information is anyway. Welltory's free version gives you one measurement a day with five core indexes and keeps 30 days of history; Premium is $99 a year on welltory.com/plans, and the details and the blog reader discount are on our page on how much Welltory costs. For a step-by-step guide, see how to measure HRV without a wearable.
That is why we say "without a new device", not "without a device": the phone is the device.
If you already own a device, what does it cost just to read the data?
This is the question most buying guides skip, and for many readers it is the only one that matters. If an Apple Watch, a Galaxy Watch, a Garmin, a Pixel Watch, an Oura or a chest strap is already on your wrist, finger or chest, the device cost is sunk. What is left is the cost of interpretation:
| You already own | Cost to keep reading the data | Over 3 years |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch, Galaxy Watch or Garmin, built-in apps only | $0 | $0 |
| Garmin + Connect+ annual | $69.99 a year | $209.97 |
| Oura Ring 4 or 5 + membership annual | $69.99 a year | $209.97 |
| Pixel Watch or Fitbit + Google Health Premium | from $9.99 (Google Store; annual figure not shown) | — |
| WHOOP | the membership is the device: $199–$359 a year | $597–$1,077 |
| Any of the above + Welltory free version | $0 | $0 |
| Any of the above + Welltory Premium annual | $99 a year | $297 |
So what is $99 a year of Welltory Premium for, if your watch already shows a stress score? It is a second layer on top of what you own, not a replacement for it. With an Apple Watch, a Galaxy Watch 4 or later, or a compatible chest strap, Welltory takes an HRV measurement and analyses it with 21 metrics; with Oura, Garmin or Fitbit, it brings in sleep, steps and workouts through a direct connection or through Apple Health, Health Connect or Samsung Health. You tag what happened, and over weeks you see what tends to come before your harder days. Premium also keeps your full history; the free version keeps 30 days.
It is a fair question whether you need a second layer at all. If your watch's own score already changes how you plan your day, you may not. If you look at it and think "so what?", that gap is what an analysis layer is for. When your device and your feelings disagree, start with why your wearable and your feelings disagree.
Which costs are easy to miss over three years?
The table uses list prices, but a few things move the real number:
Monthly versus annual billing. Oura monthly costs $71.88 a year against $69.99 annual; Garmin Connect+ monthly costs $83.88 a year against $69.99. Small per year, noticeable over three.
Renewals. Subscriptions typically renew until you cancel, and renewal prices can change. Check each company's terms and note the renewal date when you buy.
Included months. Oura's first month, three months of Google Health Premium with a Pixel Watch or Fitbit, and Garmin's free trial all lower year one slightly — and then the regular price starts.
Tax and accessories. All figures are before tax. Bands, chargers and sizing are extra or vary by model.
Switching. Data rarely moves cleanly between ecosystems. If you might switch, check how each company lets you export your data before you commit.
Device lifespan. A one-time purchase spreads over the years you actually use it. Three years is a reasonable horizon to compare, not a promise of how long any device lasts.
How do you choose without overspending?
A few neutral rules that hold whatever you buy — or don't:
Start from what you already own. Wear your current watch to bed for two weeks and look at the HRV, stress or readiness screens you have never opened. Many people find they already have the data.
Decide whether you need the night. If sleep is the main question, passive overnight tracking is worth paying for. If you want a morning check-in, a spot reading does the job for far less.
Check what is free before you subscribe. Oura, Garmin, Google and Welltory all show part of their data without a subscription. Use the free tier for a few weeks first.
Count the third year. A setup that looks cheap in year one can be the most expensive by year three, and the other way round.
Buy for the question, not the deal. A discount on something you will not wear is not a saving. If you are unsure, our guide to whether you need a new wearable walks through it by use case, and health investments under $100 lists cheaper options.
Plan how you will know it is working. Write down what you hope to change before you buy, then compare after a few weeks — see is my wellness gadget working.
If you live with a chronic condition and are pricing a pacing setup, the costs and the priorities are different — saving energy matters more than saving money. We cover that in pacing apps and what they cost.
Why the most expensive setup isn't the one that changes your week
It is easy to feel that tracking "didn't work" because you stopped looking at it, and to conclude the fix is a better device. Usually it is not.
The data from almost any setup in this guide will show the same things: a short night, a late meal, a hard workout or a stressful evening tends to show up in the next morning's HRV. What changes your week is noticing that pattern and acting on one thing — going to bed 30 minutes earlier, moving the hard session, cutting the late drink — then watching the trend for one to two weeks.
Before you blame yourself for falling off tracking, check what your body already recorded. If your watch has months of HRV you have never opened, the cheapest upgrade is reading it. If the readings vary wildly from day to day, that is normal: we explain why HRV fluctuates day to day. And if you are comparing stress-tracking hardware specifically, see stress monitoring devices compared.

How Welltory helps — and what it cannot do
Welltory is a general wellness app, not a medical device, and it does not make or sell hardware. It does not diagnose, and nothing it shows replaces a clinician. It helps you track and understand signals your body already produces, with a device you already have.
A routine that works with the cheapest setup in this guide — or on top of the most expensive one:
Measure at the same time each morning, before coffee and before your phone — with the camera, an Apple Watch, a Galaxy Watch 4 or later, or a compatible chest strap such as the Polar H10.
When the app asks what happened, answer with a tag — tapped, typed or spoken: a late dinner, a hard session, a bad night, a difficult conversation.
Read your stress and energy for the day before planning it, and put the heavy things on the days your body can take them.
If you wear an Oura, a Garmin or a Fitbit, connect it once — directly or through Apple Health, Health Connect or Samsung Health — so sleep and workouts sit next to your readings.
After a few weeks of tagged readings, look at what tends to come before your harder days. Patterns in the app are connections worth discussing with your doctor, not proof of a cause.
What Premium adds: as many measurements a day as you like in Journal, the 21 metrics behind each reading, sleep analysis, weekly and monthly trends, and a history kept beyond 30 days. What the free version keeps: one measurement a day with five core indexes, breathing practices, and syncing with Apple Health, Health Connect and Samsung Health. Premium is $99 a year on welltory.com/plans; store prices can differ.
What Welltory cannot do: record your night passively without a wearable, take HRV measurements from an Oura ring or a Garmin watch inside the app (they provide activity and sleep data instead), detect a heart rhythm problem, or tell you what a symptom means. Camera measurements are also less reliable if you are under 18 or pregnant, as the Help Center notes. A persistent symptom — chest pain, fainting, a racing heart at rest, exhaustion that does not lift — belongs with a clinician, whatever any score says.
